In 2003, Rolex marked the 50th anniversary of the Rolex Submariner with the launch of the Ref. 16610LV, with a green bezel, better known to collectors as the Rolex "Kermit". Why green? Rolex has long associated itself with the green color. Its logo, boxes, hang tags, etc. are all green. The brand has never offered any official explanation for why this is. The general consensus though is that it’s because green is synonymous with money. And by extension success, power and so on. All things Rolex seeks to represent.
The bezel wasn’t the only thing that looked different on the new Ref. 16610LV. The 50th anniversary model also saw the introduction of the "Maxi dial" to the Submariner. Having made its debut on the Yacht-Master in 1991, the dial features larger hands and indexes. Further improving legibility and giving a subtle nod to some of the earliest examples of the Submariner. This is a MK5 dial: the word "OFFICIALLY" is placed more to the right and the space between the "Y" in "OFFICIALLY" and the "C" in "CERTIFIED" has been reduced compared to other MKs. The words "SWISS MADE" remain to be narrow but now the 28 and 32 markers have stopped being shorter and are on the same level as all the other minute tracks, the words are almost closed by the 2 markers. The oval at the base of the coronet remains wider. The "O" in "ROLEX" has a round shape. The words "OYSTER PERPETUAL DATE" are wide and with big gaps between each word, the "R" of "OYSTER" sits between the legs of the "R" in "ROLEX".
This is a 3rd case: it has an engraved rehaut: the word "ROLEX" repeated 3 times is laser engraved on the rehaut, along with the watch’s serial number. The model number remains between the lugs at 12 o’clock. This is a "T" case with solid lugs and the model number 16610T engraved between the lugs, with "T" standing for "Trou Borgne", or "Blind Hole". It’s important to note that the model number engraved on the case doesn’t have the suffix LV.
The bezels of the 16610LV are divided into 2 main groups: "Fat 4" and "Pointed 4", with the early "Fat 4" bezels only in production for a few months. The watch that we offer you has a 4th "Pointed 4" bezel: pointed "4", "Square 5", with the narrow pointed "4", but the internal corners of the "5" in "50" are perfectly square. Bezel is dark racing green.

At the heart of the Ref. 16610LV, beats Rolex’s calibre 3135 movement. First introduced in 1988, the calibre 3135 has powered the majority of Rolex’s date-displaying, automatic watches for nearly 3 decades. Although the calibre 3135 has seen subtle improvements over the years, as Rolex continues to refine and improve its performance and reliability, it is still largely the same design that was first released more than 30 years ago. The calibre 3135 uses 31 jewels, with a 48-hour power reserve.
