Considered as the watch that took Master watchmaker Officine Panerai to create wristwatches under the highest demands in terms of features and precision, in 1936 produced the prototypes of what would become its greatest icon: the Radiomir. Designed for the Italian Royal Army, it wasn't until 1940 that Panerai manufactured the first of this model's series putting together all the specifications requested by the Diving Squad. One of its main characteristics (and at that time, the first of many Panerai's patents) was the luminescent material in its markers. On the first models, the markers were filled with a radium-based powder as luminescent material (therefore the Radiomir name) that provided high resistance and readability in underwater extreme conditions. Also, its domed case and the wire lugs for long straps were ideal for wearing over a diving suit. Other characteristic of the Radiomir is its dial, of which several versions exist. But the first to appear, as early as 1936, was the so-called "California" dial, with its distinctive alternation of Roman and Arabic numerals, bar markers and a railway track minute circle. But given the need to increase its visibility so that the commandos could use the watch in the most complete darkness, Panerai made the dial more luminous. While modern series keep its predecessors aesthetics, the technology and materials used in its manufacture are state-of-the-art in fine watchmaking. This Panerai Radiomir California 3 Days in 47mm with a vintage look is a indispensable piece in the collection of true lovers of the brand and haute horlogerie.
