Considered as the oldest watch brand in the world and with a long tradition in the watchmaking industry, Blancpain created in the early 50's the model that granted it worldwide recognition and prestige: the Fifty Fathoms. Amid the controversy of which was the first modern diving wristwatch, the first models of the Fifty Fathoms go far back as to 1953. Originally designed with military specifications for the French Army's elite combat diving squad, the Fifty Fathoms (named after the British measurement of 50-fathoms which was, at that time, the maximum depth -about 92 meters- which a diver could bear) incorporated all the fundamental features for a professional diving watch: highly water-resistant case, unidirectional rotatable bezel, a black dial with highly luminescent markers, magnetic protection and an automatic movement that avoided unscrewing the crown for hand-wounding. Nowadays, there is no professional diving wristwatch missing any of these characteristics. In the golden years of undersea exploration, one of its most prominent personalities, Jaques Cousteau, chose the Fifty Fathoms as the precision tool for his underwater adventures. There are picture archives and movie photograms where we can see a Fifty Fathoms on his wrist. The resent designs of this iconic model, have preserved the essence of its predecessors yet with slight aesthetic variations that add versatility for professional and casual use. This variant with a black ceramic case made from high-end resistant materials and its NATO strap, make this beautiful timepiece a handy and comfortable accessory for every occasion. Hands down, a classic that charms generation over generation, the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe in 43mm is the must-have timepiece that any true fine watchmaking connoisseur should include in his personal collection.
